Fraudster steals victims phone before attempting to empty savings

The Betrayal

The victim met the fraudster during a night out in Manchester’s Gay Village. They shared a taxi ride back to the victim’s home, where the trust turned into betrayal. The visitor made an excuse to leave, taking the victim’s mobile phone and laptop with him. It wasn’t until later that the victim realised his belongings were missing, leading to a sense of powerlessness and distress.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, the victim expressed his despair, stating he felt as though someone was taking over his life. He believes the perpetrator observed him entering his phone passcode and then changed the facial recognition settings to access his banking apps. While Monzo thwarted an attempt to transfer £1,000, the thief successfully withdrew £300 from the victim’s Barclays account using his debit card.

The Police Response

The victim reported the shoulder surfing incident to the police. However, efforts to locate his phone using his smartwatch proved futile. Authorities informed him that recovering his stolen items was unlikely. This experience left the victim feeling violated and disoriented. Falling victim to fraud doesn’t just result in financial loss; it can also cause significant emotional distress. The victim, in this case, felt a deep sense of violation and helplessness.

UK Finance, representing 300 banks, reported that fraudsters made £45 million through mobile phone fraud in 2023, affecting around 20,000 victims. This statistic highlights the growing sophistication and patience of modern fraudsters. Arun Chauhan, a fraud lawyer from Tenet Law and trustee of the Fraud Advisory Panel charity, warns that fraudsters can financially groom individuals, playing a long game to gain their trust and exploit their vulnerabilities.

In this case, the victim was relatively fortunate as his bank, Monzo, stepped in and prevented further financial loss. Their timely intervention stopped an additional £1,000 from being stolen.
